Video circulating on WRAL shows the moments before Bishop Reverend William Barber’s arrest at the U.S. Capitol this past Monday. Officers warned advocates they would face arrest if they remained in the Capitol Rotunda. Barber joined fellow clergy and activists protesting what they called the Trump administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” He has dubbed the proposal a “big ugly deadly budget bill,” arguing it would harm millions of Americans.
In a recent Facebook post, Barber wrote, “In growing numbers, clergy, faith leaders and people of good conscience continue to join together in prayer and moral resistance against injustice, corruption and oppression.” Demonstrators held signs reading “Don’t slash our lifeline! Medicare saves moms and babies!” and “Tax the rich! Don’t cut SNAP for 40 million poor people!”
This wasn’t Barber’s first arrest at the Capitol. In April he and Reverend Jonathan Wilson Hartgrove were detained after praying in the Rotunda. And in May, Barber faced accusations from his ex‐wife of misusing nonprofit funds—claims he and his organization have called baseless.
