Fayetteville Faces Shelter Crisis as Salvation Army Closes Its Doors

Welcome to today’s episode. A significant community resource in Fayetteville is closing its doors. The Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope Shelter has announced it will close immediately due to funding shortages. Major Aaron Goldfarb stated, "We have no funding partners, and we cannot continue to offer shelter without funding." The organization has been operating at a deficit for months, making this difficult decision even more pressing.

Fortunately, the Salvation Army has managed to secure housing for all resident families, though 26 single men and women still need assistance. Major Goldfarb emphasized, “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this closure,” as they work to connect clients with alternative resources.

Local officials are also expressing their concern. Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin remarked, "We are saddened to hear about the closure of this valuable community asset," while Cumberland County commissioner chair Kirk deViere called it a "vital resource for our most vulnerable residents."

In 2023, the Salvation Army of the Sandhills provided nearly 18,000 nights of shelter. With a total revenue of just over two million dollars, it’s evident that supporting such nonprofits is crucial in maintaining community support systems. Stay with us for more updates on this developing story.
