Hollywood's Revival: How Fallout is Paving the Way for Big-Budget TV in California

Hello and welcome to Made in California. I’m your host, and today we’re diving into how the Amazon series Fallout is leading a crusade to bring big‐budget TV back to Hollywood’s home turf.

Showrunner Jonathan Nolan recently threw open the doors of his Santa Clarita set—where 600 to 800 local crew members work every day—to seven state legislators. His mission? To urge California lawmakers to double the state’s annual tax credit from $375 million to $750 million. “Everything you see here,” Nolan said, “from the sets to the costumes to the props—every single item put in front of camera—has been made by teams of people. It’s crazy. This should be a wake-up call to everyone.”

Production in California has plunged by 30 percent since early 2025, lured away by richer rebates in Georgia, New York and abroad. But Nolan moved Fallout’s second season here, accepting a $25 million rebate, cutting his schedule by 18 days and hiring every first-choice crew member.

Senator Ben Allen called the experience “eye-opening,” while actor Walton Goggins reminded us, “This is why people come here. This is where you dream.”

If lawmakers approve the bigger credit, California could reclaim thousands of jobs and billions in payroll—and keep dreaming big on screen.

Thanks for listening—join us next time for another story of California’s creative comeback.
