Mastering Your Money After Hardship: Strategies to Combat Revenge Spending

Welcome back to your weekly money minute. Today we’re tackling revenge spending, which, as the article puts it, happens when you “throw your money around as a way to ‘get back’ after experiencing a period of financial hardship.”

Step one: create a values-based budget. The 50/15/5 rule is a good start, but a values-based plan goes further. List your top priorities—retirement, travel, emergency fund—then allocate more resources to what matters and cut back on the rest.

Next, try cash stuffing. Label envelopes for each expense, fill them with your budgeted cash, and once an envelope is empty, you’re done spending in that category.

Also, stick to a “to-buy” list. Write down desired items before you swipe your card. This forces thoughtful decisions.

Recognize your spending triggers. Reflect on your emotions when you overspend and spot patterns.

Finally, remember moderation is key. Ask yourself, “How do I expect this purchase will make me feel?” Indulge thoughtfully and reclaim control of your wallet.
