Ministrokes Unmasked The Hidden Dangers of Transient Ischemic Attacks

Welcome to Health Spotlight. Today we’re talking about transient ischemic attacks, or ministrokes, and why they’re anything but minor. Ten years ago, office manager Kristin Kramer woke up unable to speak and noticed “my right hand wasn’t working.” But when the symptoms faded, she shrugged them off—until she ended up in the ER with a small stroke.

A new study in JAMA Neurology finds that over five years, people who’ve had a T.I.A. experience cognitive decline “as steeply” as those who suffered full strokes. Dr. Victor Del Bene tells us, “If you have one stroke or one T.I.A., … the rate of cognitive decline is the same.” And as Dr. Eric Smith puts it, “Transient Ischemic Attack — Not So Transient After All!”

Remember BE FAST: Balance, Eyesight, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech problems, and Time to call 911. Don’t ignore fleeting symptoms—early treatment can make all the difference.
