Hello and welcome to NASA in a Minute. Today we look at the surprising move unfolding at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, perched above the Seinfeld-famous Tom’s Restaurant. For nearly six decades, researchers here have led climate science breakthroughs—from James Hansen’s 1988 warning on greenhouse gases to climate models shaping planetary exploration. Now NASA has ordered over 100 staff to vacate Armstrong Hall by the end of May as part of a Trump administration push to “increase efficiency” in federal leases. But Columbia University notes that the $3 million-a-year rent remains due until 2031, meaning “there is no logic behind this,” says NASA scientist Kostas Tsigaridis. With no new site yet, scientists face temporary remote work and long-term storage for offices, furniture and decades of research papers. Columbia promises to secure new space, but cuts in federal grants and funding uncertainty are already hitting morale. We’ll continue tracking this story. Thanks for listening.
