Rescue the Deep: A Dive into Ocean Conservation with David Attenborough

Welcome to Popular Science Podcast. Today we’re diving into the new feature-length documentary Ocean with David Attenborough. At the film’s outset, Sir David reflects, “After living for nearly 100 years on this planet, I now understand the most important place is not on land, but at sea.”

We sat down with director Toby Nowlan and marine ecologist Enric Sala. Toby’s biggest surprise? “When you protect an area of ocean, that space fills back up with life again, quicker and in a more spectacular fashion than anything anyone had dared to imagine.” He adds that ocean recovery spills over, reviving far-reaching marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Enric, who’s studied oceans for 35 years, confesses that there’s “nothing like seeing things with your own eyes,” after witnessing the devastation of bottom trawling firsthand. Yet the film isn’t anti-fishing—it’s a pro-abundance story championing healthy fisheries and thriving seas.

Recovery is real and swift when we protect marine habitats. Unlike land parks, ocean sanctuaries seed life far beyond their boundaries. The call is clear: protect our oceans and share this message of hope.
