Tesla's Cybertruck Range Extender Scrapped: What It Means for Owners and Future Models

Today we’re talking about Tesla’s decision to scrap the range extender accessory for the Cybertruck. It confirmed in emails to owners that it’s “no longer planning to sell” the $16,000 battery pack and will issue full refunds for deposits. Initially promised to boost the dual-motor Cybertruck’s range to 470 miles, its estimates were later cut to 445 miles and a release date pushed from early to mid-2025 before quietly disappearing from the online configurator.

Tesla introduced the range extender to address disappointment that the final Cybertruck lineup fell short of early promises. When unveiled in 2019, the tri-motor model was said to offer over 500 miles for about $70,000, but the production version starts at $69,990 with 362 miles, while the $99,990 tri-motor delivers just 301 miles.

This cancellation follows weaker-than-expected demand. Despite Elon Musk claiming “over 1 million” reservations, only 35,000 to 50,000 units sold in 2024, and overall Tesla sales dropped 13 percent in Q1 2025 amid protests and boycotts.
