The Silent Struggle of Generation X: Resilience in the Shadows

Hello and welcome to One Minute Economics. “We suffer,” said Seneca, “more often in imagination than in reality.” Today we look at Generation X—and why its members may be the real losers among our cohorts. Born between 1965 and 1980, Gen Xers grew up in the shadow of boomers and now find themselves sandwiched between elderly parents and struggling children. They missed out on rock-bottom mortgage rates and tech stock windfalls enjoyed by millennials. Their defined-benefit pensions have vanished, replaced by risky 401(k) plans. Student debt still looms large, and home-ownership rates for Gen X hover near historic lows. Politically they wield little clout, overshadowed by boomers and millennials who dominate both ballots and headlines. While younger generations grab headlines for protests or startups, Gen X simply keeps working, saving and caregiving—often with fewer rewards than their older and younger peers. That quiet resilience may be admirable, but it paints a sober picture of the generation that history may forget.
