The Evolution of Retro Handhelds From Modded Classics to Modern Marvels

Hey everyone, welcome back to Retro Update. Today we’re taking a quick look at how far retro handhelds have come since our channel first started. As we said back then, “we’ve seen a ton of improvements in retro handhelds over the past five years.” And it’s true—what began as simple Game Boy shell mods and basic screen upgrades has blossomed into a thriving ecosystem of purpose-built devices.

Early on, we were excited just to get a backlit display and save states on a Game Boy Advance. Fast forward to today, and you can pick up pocket-sized systems with awesome IPS screens, rechargeable batteries, and open firmware that supports everything from classic 8-bit to 32-bit titles. FPGA-powered options deliver near-perfect authenticity, while community-driven projects like handheld MiSTer clones keep growing in sophistication.

It’s amazing to reflect on that first video and realize, as we put it, “let’s take a look at how things were when this channel first started, and how things have evolved to what we have today.” From humble mods to feature-packed consoles, retro handhelds have never been better. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned for more!
