Hello and welcome to Today’s Tech Brief. In a recent 60 Minutes feature, tech mogul Palmer Luckey—who shot to fame in his teens by founding Oculus and selling it to Facebook—detailed his latest venture: transforming warfare with AI. His defense startup, Anduril Industries, is creating autonomous weapons powered by artificial intelligence for the U.S. military and its allies. “We’re preparing the battlefield of tomorrow,” Luckey says, describing systems like drone swarms, autonomous surveillance towers and semi-submersible sea gliders that detect, classify and engage targets with minimal human input. Critics argue these machines could lower the threshold for conflict, sparking ethical and safety concerns. Yet Luckey maintains, “Autonomy will be the defining technology of 21st-century war.” With machines poised to make split-second life-and-death decisions, we must ask: Are we ready for AI to pull the trigger?
