Transforming Your Outdoors into an Enchanting Oasis with Backyard Beat

Welcome to “Backyard Beat,” I’m your host, and today we’re exploring how the American backyard has blossomed into an outdoor oasis. Since the pandemic began, homeowners nationwide have invested a record $10 billion annually in patios, fire pits, and alfresco kitchens. As Joanna Saltz, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful, tells CBS Sunday Morning, “People want a space that extends their home—comfort without walls.”

Designer David Pogue takes us to a Texas residence where Foxterra Design crafted a living room under the sky: a reclaimed-wood pergola draped in climbing vines, a built-in pizza oven, and string lights that glow well into the evening. Saltz notes the trend toward multiuse furniture and weatherproof textures—“couch cushions you don’t have to store,” she says, “and rugs you can hose off after a barbecue.”

From minimalist Zen gardens to full-scale outdoor theaters, the backyard is now a year-round retreat. Ready to rethink your own patch of green? Stay tuned for more inspiration on “Backyard Beat.”
