Trump's Tax Tangle: The Millionaire Dilemma in the GOP Budget Bill

· 01:03

Hello and welcome to the Minute Brief. President Trump has revived and then recoiled from the idea of taxing millionaires in the GOP’s big budget bill. Earlier this week he floated a new top rate on incomes above $2.5 million, arguing it would blunt critics who say the package favors the wealthy. Then Friday morning he warned that even a “TINY tax increase for the RICH” could unleash a backlash and reminded Republicans of George H.W. Bush’s “Read my lips: No new taxes” pledge. Still, he added, “I’m OK if they do.” With lawmakers racing to finalize their “big, beautiful bill” by Memorial Day and a fierce divide among anti-tax activists, the president’s on-again, off-again stance may tip the balance. As Senator Mike Crapo put it, “If the president weighs in in favor of it, then that’s going to be a big factor.” That’s all for today’s Minute Brief. Thanks for listening.
